Just who are the “Melody Makers of DeKalb County” ?  This chorus has been around many years and the singers come from all around our county.  Our local group organized back in 1941 and is part of a state-wide organization comprised of choruses from many other counties around the state.  We are affiliated with Extension Homemakers in Indiana.

We are a group that loves to sing and enjoys the fun and fellowship we share.  Our music covers a wide range, from pop tunes to show tunes, to folk music, to romantic ballads, patriotic tunes, spirituals and holiday music...all beautiful arrangements.  The state director and his committee select new music each year for all participating county groups.  Our purpose is to grow musically and to have fun while mastering the wide variety of music we are privileged to sing.

We work hard at learning all these numbers throughout the year.  In June, all county groups get together for a Festival Day at Purdue University to perform as a mass chorus of hundreds of women for the public.  This big chorus also performs annually at the Indiana State Fair in August.

On the local level, our county group is asked to entertain for many civic organizations and church functions, such as Veteran’s Day, Christmas and Mother’s Day parties and many other special events.  We especially  enjoy entertaining at area nursing homes.

Our current directors are Chris Lilley and Chris Smith and we are accompanied by Jean Howard.  Rehearsals are held in Garrett at the First Church of Christ, 213 E. King St.  From September through February we practice on the second, fourth and fifth Tuesday evenings.  Beginning in March we practice every Tuesday, fine tuning our music for Festival Day  which ends our season.  Rehearsal times are from 7:00 to 8:30pm.

Always on the lookout for new members to sing with us, we encourage any interested singers to contact either Doris Wessel at 260-925-4448 or Chris Smith at 260-357-5825 for more details.

This may be just the group for you!

Come sit in on any practice and decide for yourself.
